Experience can be a valuable asset, in the software industry like in every other, but it can also lead to biased opinions. When we have a lot of experience in a particular area, we can start to believe that our way of doing things is the only right way. We may also start to discount other viewpoints, even if they are valid. Or just do not pay the right attention to less experienced members of the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is because our experiences shape our worldview. We tend to see the world through the lens of our own experiences, and this can make it difficult to see things from other perspectives. As a result, we may develop biased opinions about certain topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, if you have had a bad experience with a particular brand of car, you may be more likely to have a negative opinion of that brand. Even if there is evidence to suggest that the brand has improved over time, you may still be reluctant to give it a try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not to say that experience is always a bad thing. In fact, it can be a valuable asset when it comes to making decisions. However, it is important to be aware of the potential for bias when making decisions based on experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A high percentage of my current team is less experienced engineers, but I find a lot of value in getting their opinion on very complex design sessions because one thing that experience has taught me is that less experienced engineers think a lot more easily out of the box, and with some frequency they include very interesting points into complex system discussions. I feel that my role as an experienced engineer is to guide them during brainstorms and put together all ideas while considering all the options and not only those that I bring to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
